About Kotdwar

Kotdwar is located on the banks of Khoh River in Pauri Garhwal district of Uttarakhand. It is sited at a distance of 55 km away from its district Headquarters Pauri Garhwal, 85 km away from the state capital Dehradun and 199 km away from the national capital Delhi. Kotdwar on the south west border of Uttarakhand forms one of the major gateways to its state.

Kotdwar is referred as “Abode of God” as pilgrims from all over their nation starts their holy journey to Badrinath and Kedarnath from Kotdwar. The city is also one of the popular meditation spot for many saints. The city by itself got its own beautiful view as it is located in Khoh River banks it is locked by Shivalik mountain range on its three ranges. 

People of all religions and communities reside in Kotdwar who mostly speak Hindi and a local Kotdwar regional language Garhwali.

The city was initially called as “Khohdwara” representing this city as the gateway to River Khoh on time the name changed to Kotdwar. At present the city is one of the commercial hubs for supplying goods to most of the hill stations like Srinagar, Pauri, Badrinath and Kedarnath.  

History of Kotdwar

Kotdwar is a historic city which was initially ruled by Emperor Ashoka the Great from Mauryan dynasty proceeded by Panwar dynasty from Garhwal and then by Nepal Gorkhas for 12 years after which the city came under the control of British rule as a part of British Garhwal. Upon independence the city became a part of Pauri Garhwal district of Uttar Pradesh until 2000 when new Uttarakhand district formed it came within the border of Uttarakhand.

E. T. Atkins recorded many details of this city in his “The Himalayan Gazetteer” published in 1882 mainly about the commercialization of Kotdwar. He mentioned Kotdwar as a small city with many commercial establishments close to River Khoh. It is mentioned there was a fort on hill end of the city to keep away robbers form Kotdwar. As mentioned the Kotdwar market was very popular in its neighbourhood as customers from many regions purchase many goods like pulses, spices, garments, fibres and many more at a cheaper rate than Srinagar market. The forest regions in the city had timber and bamboo cutting. The Tuesday and Friday fairs in Kotdwar are attended by huge number of people. 

Geography of Kotdwar

Kotdwar is elevated at a height of 454 meters above sea level. The city is surrounded by Ekeshwar Tehsil in the East, Rikhnikhal Tehsil in the East, Yamkeshwar Tehsil in the west and Pokhra Tehsil in the East. The city is located close to its state border which makes Kotdwar close to its neighbouring state Uttar Pradesh.

River Khoh forms the east boundary of the city and a tributary of Khoh River flows very close to the west boundary of the city. The banks of River Malini and River Sukhro also flow very close to Kotdwar border.
Also the city rests on the foothills of Himalayan mountain Range Shivalik. Fertile alluvial soil is observed in Kotdwar.  

Climate in Kotdwar

Temperate temperature prevails in Kotdwar. Summers are hot while winters are very cold in the city. The city also experiences snowfall during winters. The city had experienced a maximum of 43 degree Celsius in summers and in winter from 4 to 29 degree Celsius. Although the winters are very cold in Kotdwar the temperature had not dropped below freezing till date. During monsoon the city experiences heavy rainfall.

Administration in Kotdwar

Kotdwar city in Pauri Garhwal district constitutes a Nagar Panchayat with 12 wards for which elections are conducted once in 5 years to elect 12 ward members to Kotdwar Nagar Panchayat to form the local body. The city operates under Garhwal administrative division of Uttarakhand state administration which is headed by a division commissioner.

Kotdwar city is one of the nine sub districts or Tehsils in Pauri Garhwal district apart from Pauri, Lansdowne, Thalisain, Srinagar, Dhumakot, Satpuli, Yamkeshwar and Chaubatta Khal. Kotdwar is a Tehsil Headquarters. The city is also one of the fifteen developmental blocks in Paui Garhwal.

The city belongs to Garhwal Lok Sabha constituency and the current MP of the constituency is Shri Bhuwan Chandra Khanduri elected to Indian parliament in the year 2014. The city comes under Kotdwar Vidhan Sabha constituency and the current MLA of the constituency is Shri Surendra Singh Negi elected to Uttarakhand Vidhan Sabha in the year 2012.
